My creative space

I never really set out to make an album. And I certainly never set out to build a website.

I've written songs for most of my life. Mostly because something happened, somebody mattered, or there was something rattling around in my head that was easier to sing than to say.

Most of those songs weren't written for an audience. They were written for weddings, birthdays, relationships, heartbreaks, family, friends — and sometimes just for me.

For years they lived where songs like that tend to live: in old notebooks, on scraps of paper, on forgotten recordings and, increasingly unreliably, in my memory.

Then technology changed.

Suddenly I had ways of taking songs I'd carried around for decades and hearing what they might have sounded like with the band, arrangement or production I'd imagined when I wrote them. Sometimes I perform them. Sometimes AI helps me realise them. Sometimes AI becomes part of the creative process itself.

I'm not particularly interested in pretending otherwise. Where AI is involved, I try to say so. The point isn't who pressed which button. For me, it's about preserving the idea, the moment and the story that caused the song to exist in the first place.

And somewhere along the way, that became bigger than the music.

Old photographs appeared. Handwritten songbooks came out of cupboards. Videos resurfaced. Stories I'd forgotten came back with them. What started as somewhere to put my music slowly became somewhere to put my stuff.

So that's what this site is.

Not a portfolio. Not a musical career retrospective. And definitely not a claim that everything here is a masterpiece.

It's a life being slowly unpacked, labelled and put somewhere I can find it again.

The Music

Some of it is old. Some of it is new. Some is carefully produced and some is little more than a voice, a guitar and a moment. What connects it all is that, somewhere along the way, each song became part of my story or the story of somebody who mattered to me.

The Technology

Technology has given me ways to revisit ideas that once existed only as lyrics, chords or rough recordings. AI is sometimes a production tool, sometimes a collaborator, and sometimes the creative engine itself. Where it plays a part, I'll try to make that clear. The technology is part of the story too.

The Archive

This site isn't finished, and I don't really expect it ever will be. There are still notebooks to open, recordings to find, photographs to rediscover and stories I've probably forgotten. As they turn up, they'll find their place here.
